  GLOSSARY OF EMOTIIONS

"Emotions are the colour of the soul - they are spectacular and incredible. When you don't feel - the world becomes dull and colourless". William P. Young

Emotions are energetic sensations or feelings usually experienced in our bodies and minds when we interact with others and our environment. Emotions for many people are conditioned responses of our subconscious minds to our physical bodies' experiences in relationships and interactions. They are mostly karmic in origin and (re)conditioned in early childhood in this lifetime. Authentic emotions are gifts. Their true purpose is to inform our conscious minds and help us make spiritual sense of our physical existence. When used accordingly emotions keep us healthy and harmonious in the world.

The English vocabulary contains a vast number of emotions. Most people are limited in their ability to identify accurately the emotions they experience because their emotional language is conditioned to a relatively few basic ones such as: anger, hate, jealousy, like and love. Imagine the difficulties this posses for the human condition. A woman, for example, may say she hates a man because of the sound of his voice but; she does not "hate" him according to the true definition of the word. She is irritated by his voice. The word "irritate" is not a word she knows. "Hate", according to her own definition, is the closest word she knows to express the sensations in her body on hearing his voice. A clearer understanding of the meaning of emotions can help us better define our reactions and diminish conflict with others.

Consider that, because emotional responses are conditioned, most people live their lives in emotional reaction. That is, their actions are directed by the emotions they feel. So rather than the emotions appropriately signalling the higher brain, allowing for the input and direction from the superego and the higher self, the emotions dictate to the brain what responses are to be made, which are usually of the lower ego and myopically self-serving. Alternatively if the emotions serve rightly as signals they can facilitate input from the superego and enable the conscious mind to make wholesome responses.

We can better manage our emotional expression through conscious awareness of the scope and depth of our emotional potential and accurately naming our emotions. The more precisely aware we are of the nature of emotions the more easily we can heal those that are negatively charged. Healed lower ego emotions make room for authentic positive emotions. They can then be used to serve our greater good through the participation of our higher selves.

The list below can begin to expand your emotional language. I will add to this list as I can. You are welcome to contribute to this glossary by e-mailing emotional words, with or without their definitions, to, hypnotherapyunlimited@rogers.com.
